Has anyone on the list ever done a fresh chilled AI breeding? Was it successful?

I am trying this for the first time tomorrow and am very excited about the breeding but curious about the success rate. Positive thoughts my way - please!!!!!!

thanks

I have not done this before. Hope it went well for you today. Let us know how things went. Anxious to hear how things went.

My girl's progesterone didn't rise as rapidly as expected - so the AI is scheduled for tomorrow instead.

Will keep you updated on how it goes.

Ok, this is a stupid question but I'd like to know exactly how this is done. Step by step. Very interesting topic. Hope you don't mind me asking.

Step One - Blood draw - progesterone test to get baseline numbers. Usually done about 4 days after the bitch comes into heat.

Step Two - Progesterone rises when they have the LH surge. Should measure around 2.0 on the progesterone test. 2 days after the LH surge the bitch ovulates. It takes 2 more days for the eggs to mature. That would be day 4 after the LH surge.

Her numbers were 1.6 on Friday and 2.9 on Monday. They were 5.12 today. We are doing the AI Thursday and Saturday.

Step three - Male is collected and shipped next day Fed EX.

Cooled semen has a life of 24-48 hours so by the time you collect and ship you have a 24 hours window to catch the ripe eggs.

It gets very technical but am told that you can count 65 days from the LH surge and puppies will be born.

So far - everything is on schedule for tomorrow. Got a call from the stud owner and he had a great collection so the AI is on.

I am so excited about this litter. I am hoping for my next show puppy from this breeding.

Tipsy was AI'd this morning around 9:30. We will do a second one on Saturday.

My girl is Dobewan's Absolut Bling out of Ch. Mikadobe's You Cheated v Amoore and Ch. Rebayla's Blue Topaz Amazona (my wonderful blue girl).

The sire is Ch. Kettlecove N Manarjj Smoke n Mirrors out of Ch. Manarjj N Gra-Lemor N Cahoots and Kettlecove N Rebayla Jade. He was the winners dog at the DPCA Nationals this past year.

Let's just say by the time you add in all the costs including the stud fee and all - I probably could have bought a nice show bitch. But at least this way - hopefully there will be more than one show bitch in the litter.

I know it was expensive - but I really felt he would compliment my bitch. And it would have added up to close to the same amount to ship her to the stud and back - so I figured I would give it a try.

Fingers crossed (and toes and eyes) that it takes.

Thanks for this info, Wm-

I have never had delutes, although think they are beautiful- What is the info on breeding delute to delute? Guess, I could google but just wondered your thoughts on it-

Exciting breeding and love to see pictures- Best to ya

I would personally never breed 2 dilutes to each other. You would end up with all puppies being fawns and blues.

This is a red to blue breeding. There should be all 4 colors cause mom is a bbDd and dad is a Bbdd. I do know that the dilute coats in the dams side are very strong and they haven't shown a problem with losing their coats. That is why I did double up on the dams pedigree - to hopefully maintain that strength.

As always - when dealing with dilutes - you do stand the chance of having a bald dog in the end. You have to go into it with your eyes open to that possibility.

I am hoping for a nice black show girl. However, I do have show homes for a nice blue and a nice fawn girl. There are a lot of nice dilute champions out there now.

Oh, and some very nice champions- I just asked the question to clarify on breeding delutes- In Collies, you can't but I understand this is a very different thing - Thanks for explaining for the education of it- I am sure it will be a very nice litter- You have very nice dogs- I was thinking it was blue to blue and wondered??

Glad you brought up the dilutes as it has been reported by some that breeding for dilutes is not good. I would like to say that sometimes we say something that is correct but misleading. JUST breeding to produce dilutes like some of the BYB do that breed dilutes to dilute to produce the "rare" dilutes and sell them for more money is what is wrong and where you will have a much great chance of having dogs loose their coats.

DPCA sets the standards for breeders as guidelines to follow. All 4 colors are approved DPCA and AKC colors. As you know I just had a litter that produced dilutes. It was a black on black breeding and the coats on both sides of the pedigree have been strong up to this point. One going on 8 now and one going on 7 still with full coats.

There are breeders who do not produce dilutes period and think any good breeder would not, but I would hate to tell Kettle Cove that with their beautiful Smoke. It is my feeling that DPCA set standards in the COE that is good for breeding and when we try to restrict that based on our our personal beliefs we are wrong and it hurts the breed by shrinking a small gene pool down to even smaller. There are far bigger concerns in our breed than color - and I LOVE a beautiful fawn or blue. JMHO

I think it all goes to who is breeding the dog and what dogs- I have seen bad coats in all colors- just as you know, some have said that many have coat problems- I felt it should be asked and thanks for that explaination-
It goes a lot to the knowledge of the breeder and knowing the dogs behind your dogs- Thanks for sharing this information-

Best to Wm on her litter and Dang! I love that Smoke! He is one beautiful blue- would love to see him in person-

I think a lot of the misconceptions and thanks for that post-

RKCM - yes you can have coat problems in any color but again it goes back to breeding and knowing your line. There is a higher incidence of coat problems in dilutes absolutely - for one thing they have less hairs per square inch than the red and blacks. But the health issues are the exact as for any other doberman. I have had personal experience with several dilutes through the years and to date have not had one with a coat issue. I do remember when Dietrich was showing she blew her coat when she came into season but bounced right back and today she is 8 and still has a full coat with no meds. I just spoke with the owner last week and he is thinking about showing her now in the veterans class.

If in fact it were a bbDD (Red #7) & Bbdd (Blue #6) bred, genetically, they would only throw blacks & reds.

Didn't produce a litter - the bitch missed. I intend to breed a different female to him this summer.

My blue girl is turning 8 and still has a very nice coat. But as I said - when you get a dilute - you have to be aware and prepared that they can have skin/coat problems.
