We took Apollo to a pond where I fish. He played in the water and tried to catch some fish (which was funny to watch), drinking water because he was thirsty. That night he got the runs. He woke me up crying every hour all night long so I took him out every hour. I new something was wrong because after a while nothing was coming out but he still felt like he had to go (I felt so bad for him :( you could see in his eyes he was in pain).
The next Mourning we took him to the vet explained the situation to the vet and the vet took a stool sample and said he has a parasite. I asked him how and from where? He asked me if we let him play in any ponds or bodies of water that are standing Because most ponds (at least around here) are usually fed by rain and don't move, were as lakes are fed from springs, rivers, or mountains and exit into rivers or streams (constant flow). He gave him some medicine and we were good to go.
Two weeks later the state closed the pond due to High levels of bacteria.
I'm not saying don't let your dog swim in ponds just be weary.
