Hey. I've never owned a doberman but I think they're a really cool dog and I've been thinking about buying one. What do I need to look for? What makes the difference between a great doberman and an okay doberman? Is there anything I should steer clear of?
Is it best to buy from a breeder or from a regular dog owner? Thanks in advance.

Whenever possible get your dog from a breeder. A good breeder will provide a strong blood line and offer health checks

I bought my Doberman from a breeder. The important thing is to make sure you have verified papers on your Doberman. A breeder is more likely to be able to provide that.

I would say it depends on the type of dog you want. If you spend enough time with the pups, you can often get an idea of what kind of dog they are. The size of the pup is a good indicator of how big they will get as well. Ask yourself what type of doberman suits you and your family, and then try and pick the right puppy. Take your time when you at the breeders. Play with them all separately and try to get a feel for each of them.
Having said all that, any doberman is a good doberman. You can't really go wrong.

Going with a breeder or not is a personal preference. I've had dogs from both and even got a doberman from the shelter once many many years ago.
I bet you could find some good tips on picking out the right puppy for you if you do an internet search. Maybe try "how to choose doberman puppy." Good luck!
