AKC is now including dobermans in the lure coursing ability testing. They don't run them together in this event, but they have to be rock solid in recall. Not sure all about it yet but want to find out. Here is one picture of a friend's dog while running a course.
Beautiful example of the double suspension gallap that few dogs have. She is also AKC pointed and has natural ears.

OMG, my Mia would be a good candidate for lure coursing.

What a beautiful picture!
This is awesome news. My puppy's current favorite "toy" is a rag tied onto the end of a lunge whip that he chases around so I was looking up lure coursing as a future activity. I was so sad when I read that it was generally only for sight hounds. This is great :D
Had to edit it to get it too load. It's posted now.
Hmmmm ok, its a running doberman on a field, nothing special, don't know why everybody gets so excited about it. was hoping to see Dobe's doing the luring. Oh well love to see my dobes running too an probably got a few pic's of them doing so ;) Just to bad the pic is so extremly small.

Not a great event for a Dobermann its sight hound related and after a few runs the Dobermann will become bored with it because theres no reality or proper Finish with it. Now if theres a real rabbit out there then some real prey drive will peak out but a Dobermann isn't a high end prey breed they are more of a defense to fight breed using their bond with their owner and family and some with properties to motovate them to act. The Lure should interest young dogs but I know my dogs from the past had no interest in it I used to use the cables for Deerhounds and Salukis for their trials. I would first do some training if I had a dog that showed an interest, do NOT just show up and cut your dog loose without training for sprints and then expanding their lung capacity. Once the dog has some good training in then also walk them out and get them warm before letting them loose. Also cool them down with some water on their chest and pads and again walk them slowly. Tendons, muscles and tissue torn and stretched is NO joke it can be a long time for repairs if damage is done to those parts. Go Slow! Von

It is a game for people who want to play with their dogs. I love to see my boy run and he hasn't been hurt.
The chase is part of what dobermans and other dogs like to do. They can be hurt running on any area and not to worry. I would be more concerned about jumping at a young age. We do not have this in England but it would be a good activity to keep the dog in shape. I can run with them at the speed they enjoy and they should be able to turn it loose. Good for lure coursing.

Looks like my Jacks would have a lot of fun with that. I don't see the Gremlin doing it at any age, though. She'll happily chase a ball, but anything that runs and doesn't slow down, she'll give up on. The same for our Brown girl. They'll both chase for a little while, but would get bored within the first two minutes of it.
Or, so I'd assume. I could be wrong.

I haven't seen this with dobermans but the run is short so the dogs keep their interest keen. I think my dobermans would be in for the chase.
I have seen Dobes take part in this and it is awesome to see them trying to keep up with the whippets and greyhounds. However Dobes are far too smart and often soon figure out where the lure is going to end up and will short track to the end of the line and wait for the lure to come to them. Ya gotta love them.
By the way, a whippet is the greatest exercise machine for a Dobe.

Hi Debi
There is the odd show where they will set up a lure course, one of the shows I have seen it at occasionally is the Sudbury (Ont) shows, and they had it at a UKC show we were at last winter.
UKC is United kennel club, here is the side of them, maybe check out where some shows are and maybe some are close to you.

LoL Aesa, the lure coursing has a huge track and they are very far away from you even with the correct lens. This picture was blown up so the dog can be seen in full stride and let people know about the new event. I agree not all dobermans would enjoy this but some do and this was one of them.
I really have only seen the hounds run and look forward to seeing the doberman. They don't run them in packs like the hounds and as some of you may know the recall has to be perfect. This was sent to me by a doberman friend in Dallas. They show her, work her in obedience, and do therapy. This was just a day of fun and she did well and was certified.
I think whatever you do with your dog that it should be something you enjoy. The dogs SO want to please you that whatever you do, they will work hard to do their best. Dobermans r such a easily trained, wonderful breed.

The dog sees all training as a game. When we work with our dog and use positive rewards-the doberman will play. Lure coursing is great exercise and the speed is remarkable. Great exercise and a game some may play for awhile. It's a sport like other training.
