Interesting fact about my older dobie (Sara). I have started taking her to class at Petsmart where we have our own private intermediate OB class. (cause one moved dates and one dropped out). Sara has not been to class since she was 1 year old and now she is 7. I originally was very good with walking especially when she was my only dog. Once we got the rottie she was all over with play all the time and I slowly stopped our walking thinking she was doing fine with Roxie play. Now I've gotten Indigo (2yr old) and have started training with her. And have started Roxie in the focus and Rally training. I have watched my 6 yr old Rottie (Roxie) wake up and she really enjoys the training and the walking. I mean really! In 6 weeks she has learned about 10 new tricks and passed her canine good citizen test. We are enjoying a great relationship that our walks are developing and I want to keep on training with her and perhaps eventually do some competitions (if I can ever get that heel fixed!). So I thought, Sara might also enjoy additional training. Off we went on our first walk in quite a while without the gentle leader (I want to get her to pass her canine good citizen test and that needs a loose leash walk). What a bum she is now... pull/pull/pull. So we are going to work for the loose leash walk again. Just goes to show, you need to keep up training at all levels and ages. Sara is loving the training at Petsmart as well. She is very good at it and I think she really will be a competition dog pretty quickly.

You're right. Training never stops for your dog, whether dobe or whatever. Ours enjoy getting the attention and treats! Our new dobe will be starting her intermediate training next week. She just completed her basic. We plan on working her up to AKC good citizen sometime soon. If she would only stay focused...just all that "puppy" she's got in her!

Puppy brain is tough to overcome. Indigo is 2 yrs old, I adopted her at 20 months and she is still a puppy head. She can do all the CGC except the "other dog" part. And she isn't really good at stay yet. But we will keep working on it. Sara has the stay stuff down pat, but the loose leash walking and again "other dog" is not up to snuff. they need the mental stimulation if you ask me.. sometimes we all need a challenge right? I figure I'm going to be training challenged for the next several years.
