View Full Version : Constantly leaking urine...

My Doberman was born with incontinence. She has "leaked" from day one. Anyone else ever had this with a dog? I had only heard of it with OLDER dogs. Well, apparently, my Dobe is lacking a hormone that tells her to hold her urine. After several visits to the vet, we tried "Proin" which is often given to dogs who have issues holding urine. It worked! After endless cleaning of her bedding and trying doggy diapers, we are now "normal" with this medication. She will still leak if she drinks an excessive amount of water, but otherwise it works well.
I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this issue with their dog.

Not had this issue, but what a PIA. So glad you found something that works. My dobies have always been pretty clean dogs and obsessive lickers so this situation would have made them very unhappy.

The first day I brought Riley home from the breeder, she fell asleep on my wood floor, and I noticed a puddle at her rear. My first thought was that she may just be too young to hold it while sleeping. However, after a couple days, I noticed that she would leave drips everywhere she went. I mentioned this to the vet who told me to give it time since she is young her and her bladder muscles may not fully work yet. So, after a couple weeks go by, I am having to constantly change her bedding, and she starts loosing some fur on her back legs! So, back to the vet we go, and he tells me that it is from "urine scalding." The poor thing! So, instead of changing her bedding daily, I started changing it everytime she was in and out of the crate. Talk about a lot of laundry! At this point, the vet still did not mention "incontinence" to me, but I started researching. I figured out that either she was born with an ectopic uterer or she is incontinent. So, at the next vet visit I asked him for options for Riley's leaking... and we tried the Proin. THANK GOD it worked. The only disappointing part is, after I had Riley spayed, I found out that if a pup is born incontinent it is due to lack of a hormone. This hormone usually comes after their first heat cycle. Too bad the vet didn't think of that before we got her spayed!
So, now we deal with the incontinence thru medication, given twice daily. And things have been just fine for the most part!
Hope maybe this will help anyone who may run into this issue. I wish I would have know to wait to have her spayed so that maybe her body would adjust itself and we wouldn't need the meds. But, Riley is worth it regardless!!!

My 15 year old terrier, Daisy, has been on Proin for about 2 1/2 years now. We noticed "leaking" also and went to the vet and he prescribed it and I swear she wouldn't be around without it. My husband freaks everytime a dog has an "accident", so it put him at rest, hahaha

Just thought I would post and say that after a trial, Proin does help with the submissive or puppy peeing when they are excited. Have had a few vets tell them that the dog will have to be on it for life though. I thought this was only true with spayed females. Should this medication be stopped when they go into heat or will it affect the heat cycle? If anyone knows please let us know. Thanks. Anne
