I always suggest The Bill Koehler Method of Dog Training even though he has his critics. First he tells you to works around distractions so they will listen in real life. Then he goes over the kind of leash, how to hold it, everything. I will date myself and say that I attended one of symposiums and he was extraordinary. There are parts of the book I would not do but since I figure if I get one good tip out of a training book then it was worth reading. There is also some Koehler cyber lectures on the internet. Anne
This is not necessairily a doberman training book but it's about the breed and it has the characteristics nailed. The author also gives some good advice on behavior problems and becoming the leader of your doberman throughout the book. It's simply called "Doberman Pinchers"; 'A New Owners Guide to Doberman Pinchers' by Faye Strauss. I bought it at Petco but it's published by T.F.H. Publications, Inc. , www.tfh.com .
Hi Rich S,
Another book I found to be very helpful was Leader Of The Pack by Nancy Baer and Steve Duno. This was published by 'Quill' A Harper Resource Book; Harper Collins Publishers. I purchased this at Petco, also.
This isn't necessairily a doberman specific book but it is designed for the head strong agressive dog and the not so bright owner who unwittingly allows the dog to be in charge of the house/situation. It basically talks about the characteristics of a 'leader', meaning owner, and how this creates a calmer dog willing to follow your lead. I've tried most of the tecniques and with persistance they work very well on dobermans.
