We're lucky that Maggie bows when she gets excited. My advice to you would be to correct your dobe every time. Also, try keeping a leash on your dog during times when you think he might want to jump. When people come to the door, make your dog sit and keep your foot on his leash. Over time, he'll get the picture.

Some dogs are definitely jumpers. Kenny has given some great tips...I like that about keeping your foot on the leash, great idea!

If you consistently correct the dog each time he jumps, he will eventually get the picture. But if you ignore it sometimes, he'll keep jumping and hoping this is one of the times you ignore it.

Great advice Kenny. The key is consistency for sure. Over all, Dobermans are not known as jumpers. Hopefully your dobe will soon realize this.

Good luck!

We used the leash technique on Star when she was a pup. Worked great! Rich I think your right, Dobermans are not known as a jumpy breed.

my boxer dog is a jumper and it doesn't matter how much you yell at him or show your displeasure, he's going to jump.

i haven't seen a boxer that wasn't a jumper though haha

Hi, I own 3 bulldogs. What you need to start to do is teach him off of you with taking the bag along. He recognizes the bag as you leaving. I know it bulky but you need to take it with when you take him places. If he didn't rip skin he didn't bit you, he grabbed you that's what they do as they do not have hands like us. He knows that you are leaving him for the day and he would rather you sit and watch him sleep instead of sleeping alone. I would just desensitize him by using tha bag for other things too, at least for a while.

An innate canine impulse, jumping up serves two purposes for dogs: it's a way to show excitement, and it allows for an up close and personal sniff of scent glands in the human face. Combine the two--your pup's excited you're home from work and craves a whiff of your natural aroma--and the result is one jumpy dog.
