what is a healthy weight for an adult male doberman. He seems really skinny to me but he weighs 90lbs

How can you tell if he's too skinny?

I think dobermans are a very lean breed in general. 90lbs is a big dog. The rule of thumb is that you should be able to see their last few ribs. Keep an eye on his weight and make sure he doesn't lose any weight. And always check with your vet.

I'm with Rich on this one. Keep an eye on the weight. My girl Maggie is only 75lbs. If your really worried about it, ask you vet.

I saw a chart at the vet once that showed a way to check your dogs weight. Look at him from above and observe how far his "waist" goes in. It should go in some but not to the point that his hips are jutting out. I guess you'd have to see the picture they had to understand for sure...

Ask your vet to be on the safe side.

To be honest, I've never seen a fat doberman. We are in a constant battle with Magnum, trying to keep his weight up.

First of all is better to never fed their dogs leftovers from the dinner table, unless they are dog healthy choices. Some of the food we eat can be toxic for a dog, and greasy foods, or fried food, will make them fat and sick. As a general rule, leftovers do not constitute a healthy dog diet.So please dont give leftovers for a dog...

Dog is a God given creature....It is similar to a human being in this world ...It also has life in it...Dog food affects dogs' coat and skin. Dogs can get most of the same diseases we do. Dogs can get cancer, dogs can get heart disease, and have heart attacks. Dogs can even get diabetes.Unfortunately though a dog can not tell you when something does not feel right on them....So feed healthy food for a dog..

Very true Aden. Most people go the rule, if it's good enough for us to eat it must be good for my dog. Not true. Stick with a high quality dog food, and save the human food for a special treat (if it's a safe food for your dog to have).

I sourced the internet to find the healthy weight for an adult male doberman. Here are some of those details, the ideal weights are 58lbs and others 88lbs. Typically an adult female is about 60-70lbs and a male about 70-80lbs. A better guide for doberman puppies and adult dogs is to use the body condition score chart (BCS). In order to acheive this weight don't over feed your dog. I think this information will help you dobs.

I have to agree with Aden here. I know that so many people feed their dog table scraps because "they love it," but I've read time and again that it's unhealthy for them.

Dogs have a tendency to gain weight when they get older. This is a problem that must be watched. Weight problems usually occur because the dog no longer does as much exercise as he used to when he was younger and he eats and sleeps more. When a dog does not burn physical energy, the heart has to work harder at burning it...

Male Dobermans should not exceed about 90 pounds by standard, so if he is 5 months and 50 pounds, he is right on target. He should be close to getting to his full height and will then bulk up a fair amount by the time he reaches about 18 months and should be between 75-90 pounds, which is perfect.
Of course, that is all guessing, since I can't see your dog, but going off of what I have seen in other Dobermans your dog sounds about right.

Puppies, especially from large breeds like Dobermans, must be kept lean to avoid putting excess weight on growing joints, which in turn makes them more prone to osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia. That seems somewhat on the large size, but on pups his age, you should be able to see about 2-3 ribs and a well defined tuck up from the side.
