Hey found this nice site with a reasonable discussion of some of the dilemma of dog food choices. Doesn't promote anything..but seems to explain some of the various stances.

I have read that article before and would disagree with some of it. For one thing since I lived in Arkansas just down the road from Tyson and surrounded by many chicken farmers, I know that they had a big outside freezer and any chickens that died went into the freezer and Tyson then picked them up and they were sent to the dog food companies with no screening as to what they died of.

I have not fed Eukanuba since that time for that very reason. I also feel a low protein food is better because just like in humans too much protein is hard on the kidneys and most of the things they use to increase the protein is not digestible by the dog. Look at the scare we had in the last couple years with the rice imported from China. They were adding melamine to increase protein because we feel a higher protein is better.

Dobes especially are a very unique breed and certainly do not do well on cheap dog foods. That does not mean you have to feed very expensive to find quality. Dog food companies spend big bucks on advertising - I would rather they put that money into improving quality of the food.

Many people might not know this but Diamond makes the dog foods for several different companies.

And I am just not for the barf diet at all. Too hard to maintain when on the road at shows etc and I have to admit that the thought makes me ill.

INTERESTING...I have fed SportMix for a few years and am TOTALLY satisfied with the results. the coats are lovely, shiny, teeth maintain health and stool is manageable. Although I do feed a supplement to one dog, the rest maintain beautiful condition on this food. AND I don't have to take out a SECOND MORTGAGE...LOL...
