Anyone have good ideas to teach an old dog a soft mouth? My older dobie , Sara, has a hard mouth.. she can really get over excited and pinch me or Indigo pretty good. What I'm doing is trying to hold the treat in a fist and then letting her have it, if she is nice about it. Indigo does yelp when they are doing the chase and Sara is too hard on her. Seems that Sara always have to be the chaser.. never the chasee so she is definitely in charge there.

I saw a training video that demonstrated a technique I thought was pretty clever. The trainer carefully fed a few treats to the dog on the end of a spoon- the dog did not like the feel of the metal against it's teeth and immediately began gentling it's mouth. Can't remember the name of the dvd off the top of my head, but it was really as simple as that. HTH...:)

sounds cool, I will certainly try that. At this point my knuckles are a bit sore, but she does seem to be improving.

I have actually done that(the metal spoon) with other doberman with 90% success. With apollo I would give him treats with my mouth and told him to go slow and he would only use his front teeth ever so gently to grab it this made it easier for my children when he would snatch the treats out of there hands.
