I feed a high quality kibble twice a day, but then do a lot of clicker-training with treats that I suspect are not the healthiest (even if they are the tastiest) things. While I am an avid label reader at the grocery, and even did my homework on the kibble, I have been procrastinating doing this on the treats.

Can you share your stories of dobe-approved ;) healthful treats that can be used in a training environment?

why wouldn't you just feed kibble as treats, believe me your dog wont mind.

I do this with my labs, that way i know they are getting healthy treats.

I have thought of that, and heard that many do this. I guess I figured that training treats should be something more 'exciting' to the dog than regular meal stuff???

My dogs love treats... We use Butler Lean Treat for Large breed I get them from my vet and Steak house Treat Comp Jerky strips they really like those and I get them at petsmart they come in a 3lb bag. We also use large femur pork bones I get them from Wal-mart They are spoiled...lol I have actually gone in to Petsmart and bought over 100.00 just in treats...

I think you do need to have higher value treats for some parts of training. I use several things, the dried liver you can get at petsmart and turkey jerky. I try not to use the ones' with lots of chemicals and flavorings and I try to get something made in the US. The other thing I use for training is a dog food (Pet Botanicals) that comes in a tube, so it is semi soft. I chop it down and put it in plastic baggies in my pocket. I have also used turkey hotdogs (you can get about 30 treats out of each one). The key is to keep the treats small. The size for a dobie is about the size of your little fingernail. The point is not to feed them, but to give them something good.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. I am going to do some more shopping and researching, I'll post back if I find anything else interesting! :)

I use great choice dog biscuits from Pet Smart. I buy the tiny ones that are about 1'' in size. That way she only gets a tiny treat. I use these for training and when she goes to bed at night. When she was little I broke them in half.
I also buy the large ones and put them in a Cong type toy that is blue, its name is Dogzillia. I love this toy. You can put one whole large treat in it and it takes about 30-40 minutes for the dog to get it all out. We give it to Sabrina when we leave her alone for a day or when we are traveling and stop to shop or eat and leave her in the backseat alone. I also bought a large filled bone at Rite-Aid, she ate the filling out and then I started filling it with peanut butter and give it to her outside.

Those little biscuits are just not high enough value for my training routine unfortunately. They would be much nicer on the pocket book. Kongs and Dogzilla are similar, my girls get peanut butter frozen stuffed kongs as a crate treat, they just love them. If I have a few extra $ in the store I will sometimes buy the cheese whiz and just pipe it into the kong and freeze that up for them. They love that even more than the peanut butter.
