Wobbler’s syndrome is a malformation of the spinal cord that occurs primarily in Doberman and Great Dane breeds of dogs. The syndrome is so-called because the dogs develop a wobble in their walk. The dog may appear clumsy, unable to negotiate corners, and have difficulty moving as if inflicted with arthritis. They may stretch their necks out or be reluctant to bend them. If left untreated, Wobbler’s syndrome may result in the dog being unable to move at all.

Thanks for positing this Rich. I've read articles about Wobblers before but for some reason, I didn't know until just now that high calcium may cause risk. Guess I just missed that. Our cropping vet highly encouraged us to put Jett on Calcium tabs to help the ear cartilige (plus she's teething). She is on PetTab as well. I'm definately going to talk to our vet about this when Jett goes Tuesday.

Interesting, let us know what they say.

Discussed calcium tabs with the vet Tuesday. He had a shocked look on his face when I told him the cropping vet put Jett on it and advised me to take Jett off them immediately which I did. I had mentioned it before and he apologized for not picking up on it as we were dealing with infection then. He said that unless there was a very specific problem (like crooked legs) needing that specific treatment, that a sound diet and her regular vitamin provided all of the calcium she needed even if she is teething. Thanks again Rich for posting the article.

dino stratches his neck out a lot, but he is so lithe its unreal, the way he can turn at speed is amazing, he hits his head off walls when turning but i think thats just the classic doberman dopeyness.

When I went to a rehab specialist after my rotties CCL surgery they had a fawn dobie with advanced wobblers they were working with. He was so unhappy, I felt for him. It is a dreadful thing.. I think of it like Alzheimer's in people.
