Monday is the big day for Indigo's first heartworm treatment. They will keep her overnight to be sure that all goes according to plan. Then they send her home with some antibiotics and prednisone. There apparently is a danger from parasites in the heartworms  The prednisone is to help with her lungs and breathing while the adult heartworms die (DIE! DIE! DIE!). Complete rest is the protocol, with leash walks in the back yard. Second treatment will be after about 4 weeks. They wanted to be sure to do it on a Monday so if any reactions they would be there to deal with them during the week. I am semi scared.. I don't know what I would do if something went wrong with my little love. I feel confident that she will sail thru it based on what I have seen at the SPCA, but there is always risk.

We are taking our new Dobe in this week to be checked for heartworm. He came from Florida a couple of weeks ago and while my son made sure he was vet checked and on heartworm meds, he ( my son) was on the road much of the time and his significant other wasn't real good about making sure he got all of them, so its better to be safe.....!
Here's hoping for a full recovery.

Indigo is home safe and sound so far.
She has a great report from the vet showing no soreness in her back and no reaction to the injection. Now I have to keep her on leash everywhere for the next 14 days (this means the stairs too). Then quiet for the next 14 days.. then back for the next round of treatment.

She does seem to love the alone time next to me (I crate the other dogs when she is out so there is no issue). The funniest thing is the stairs. Going down I have a short flight of about 5 steps, then a landing turn, then about 8 steps further down. Since the first thing we do when she gets out of her crate is to go outside that means down the stairs. At the top I hold the leash close to her neck and say "slow" and don't allow bounding. So she now she comes down the short flight nice and slow, but leaves her hind legs to drag down (stretching). Then she is slow on the other flight. On the way back up is more issue. She feels that going up stairs are only done with bounces, so it has been very difficult to get her to do it slowly.. it is a work in progress.

The first week is over...and she is clearly feeling fine and ready to start having fun again. But we are having to rest for 8 weeks so it is just starting. I have been trying to find puzzle toys for her, but the one's I have seen are so expensive... and really when she is in her crate she is mostly sleeping and when she is with me she is putting her head in my lap for petting mostly so I'm not sure that we need more toys. I have tried the Nylabone in her crate, but that is just not interesting either. My biggest issue (outside of slow on the stairs) is when we go outside I have to remember to keep two hands on the leash. She can be very happy just going along, then boing! she sees a squirrel and I have to keep her from chasing. I have to spend more time with the training in the next few weeks as she is feeling so much better. I had a nice long sit/stay yesterday.. will start working on the play dead soon. :)
