Sat. night we had a card party and it was full dark outside. Jett heard/saw something and gave a ferocious bark, hit the back porch like a madwoman and began patrolling the area. We stopped playing at her first bark and started watching her. After 3 patrols around the perimeter, she came and got my husband, patrolled again, came and got me, patrolled again and got my brother. At that point we settled her, praised her and brought her back in. We never saw or heard anything, but she definately did (probably a deer or some other woods animal). What we thought was amazing was that once inside she kissed everyone at the table as if to say "you're valuable to me" then went beside my chair, flopped down, gave a huge sigh and promptly fell asleep. It was a beautiful thing to experience. I think we're gonna be safe with her.

Wow.. it is in their nature, as in what they are bred to do, I have just never seen it so clearly shown.

Apollo was 9 months old (this past summer). We had just turned the TV off to got to sleep (he sleeps in front of our bed in his bed) Him and my wife heard something, he bolted down the stairs barking, stood in front of the door growling, I took him outside to see what it was ( maybe a skunk or raccoon, he must have scared it off) brought him back up stairs, every time he goes to bed he goes in each one of the kids rooms to kiss them and check on them, he did this and went and laid on his bed facing the door staring at the steps I praised him and love him for it. No alarm system needed I know when I am not there my family is well protected.

Violator, Jett was 16 weeks old on Sunday. Our other dobes were on alert all of the time and I always felt safe with them too. I just don't remember them patrolling as early as her.

that's very cool. It must be comforting to know she's so alert

I hope when we get Deano over his fearfulness that eventually he will be able to do this for us as well! I have to travel occasionally for work, and I would feel better if he were on the job in my absence. Since we have had him, I have been crating him at night, in our family room downstairs. I would like to gradually move him upstairs to a dog bed in our bedroom, but I don't want him in bed- I'd have to move from a queen to a king size!!
When he is out of the crate and wandering the downstairs, he usually ends up on the couch in the front room where he can see the front porch and street, and we get the alarm whenever other dogs and people are passing by. Don't want him to go ballistic every time the neighbors walk by, but don't want to discourage the watchfulness either... seems like a fine line...
