I'm curious what the rest of you are using for dog toys for your dobe. We have found it quite difficult finding toys that will stand up to Magnum's power. As soon as he gets a toy, it is his personal mission to try and destroy it.

We have found the one toy that can take his assault is the large black kong

The Black Kong is for sure the only toy Newman hasn't destroyed. I once bought a red Kong, not a good idea. For what ever reason, Newman had that thing in pieces.

I go to one of our local thrift stores and buy huge stuffed animals for around a dollar a piece. My two dobies shred them within a day of being given them and I spend a little time rounding up the stuffing and tossing it. Then they play tug of war with the remaining outer shell for about a week. While it's true these stuffed toys don't hold up to their chewing and tugging games, it's cheap entertainment for them and they love it every time I come in with a new one.

One thing to look out for is the animals stuffed with little styrofoam beads (like beanie babies). These are a mess to clean up so I avoid them if possible.

I save the Kong toys for their outside playing because they hold up to the weather and their teeth.

I've found that kongs are the way to go. Different shapes and sizes, plus you can put goodies in them. I like to put a treat with some peanut butter surrounding it. Then I freeze it and its a good way to reward/occupy a quick mind!

I don't do the stuffed animal route.. first I have a small collection for when my younger relatives visit (not to be confused) and second, they are destroyed in about 2 min flat and I have to clean up stuffing and shreds everywhere. (stuffed round toy with squeaker experiences). My longest lasting, most flexible toy so far has been a basic rubbery ring toy. I can play tug, they can play tug with each other, I can throw it for fetch, and they can chew it. So far it has lasted 4 months with only teethmarks showing. I got it at Petsmart and I can't find a picture of it.

I too have been looking for a toy that will last more than a couple hours, and found these 'Tuff Toys' at a local pet specialty store. Not cheap, but the Desert Series 'Lizard' I bought is on it's 3rd week with just a minor nip out of one foot despite Deano's best attempts to shred it. Check out the website:

They have a 'toughness scale' rating for each toy, on which the Lizard is a 7, so even if he does eventually destroy it I have a few more levels available to try! They have a nice selection of different style toys I thought.
The Kong toys are pretty tough, but do not seem to be nearly as appealing to him as anything furry or squeaky, unless you load them with something. The Lizard does have a squeaker in it as well, so he does keep coming back to it.

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to take a look and see if we can them around here (Ontario Canada).

Kongs, 2 liter pop bottles (empty of course), hooves. Our Lucy will put anything in her mouth and we have to make sure it's safe and least destructive. :)

Magtie is so right about another dob being the best toy for a dob.

I do agree with Jelly8bean about the mess and the less than 20 second lasting time with stuffed animals but I don't have childrens toys on my main floor so my guys don't get confused and mistake my grandkids toys for theirs.

I've also found, like SnozerDog, that the kongs aren't as appealing to my guys unless stuffed with treats. But they do last. That's why they are their favorite outside toys. That and any basket ball I find laying along the street. Those are gone in sixty seconds, too, but they enjoy them while they last.

I too have the black Kong toy and a blue one that had a rope attached at one time. They have lasted the longest. My pup Harley, 8 mos., now can chew a tennis ball up. The Tuffy tug of war toy lasted about 4 weeks which is good at my house. My Dobes also like to shred stuffed animals in the yard. It's funny because the kids think we have snow in the summer when they see the white fluff everywhere, haha, but the stuffing can get everywhere!!!
The only other toy that has lasted in the back yard, is the Jolly Ball. It's a big thick red ball that had a rope attached to it, of course the rope does not exist anymore. You can get them at Petco or Petsmart too.

*Tuff Toys update* Week 4 :)

Lizard toy, with a '7' rating on the Tuffness scale, has begun to show signs of wear, but is hanging in there!! The tip of one foot has nearly been chewed off but amazingly is resisting complete amputation. Another foot is now sporting a gash, while the lower jaw has a 1/2" tear and seems the closest of any of the wounds to showing stuffing. Squeaker is alive and well buried somewhere in the chest. This toy is pretty tuff! :D

* Tuff Toys update * week 5

Bought a new Tuff Toy for Deano this past Saturday, the octopus-looking thing that is a 7 on the 'tuffness' scale. We got home, and when my wife saw Deano carrying it around by the head said, "He's going to have the head bitten off that thing in no time." I said, "Nahhh, I don't think so." Well, two hours later there was a big hole in 'Ozzie's' head and stuffing all over the place! But on the bright side, each leg has a squeaker in it and they are all holding up well, so maybe that's where the longevity is for this particular toy :D. We'll have to see.

The lizard is continuing it's deconstruction, but hanging in there pretty well. No stuffing yet!

Wow..I'm impressed. If I gave my girls something with legs or a head, that would be worried until off first thing. Gives them something to pull on.
