I have a 17 week old female Dobie. Her ears were looking Great at first BUT then the tip on the one ear started to fall. We took her back, and she never acted right immediately after having them retaped. She would yelp out as if she was in pain. We finally took the tampon/taping off and sure enough there was blood in her ear. We have treated her ear and at this point retaped with foam posts and medical tape and she shows no sign of pain and is doing well. However, I am very concerned because there is a REALLY FOUL smell coming from here ear. As Mercedes is our first Doberman I didnt know if this was normal or not. Is this just due to being taped or is this something else? We also have a Boxer (3 years old) and we had her ears taped but I don't remember the same type of issues that we are having now. Any advice on this would be great!

i through choice (and local law) dont crop but anyway no it is not normal at all, it seems to me ur dog either has ear mites or an ear infection, and a pretty bad one by the sounds of it, get her to the vet a.s.a.p

Mercedes: Is the smell coming from down in the ear canal? Foul smells are usually a sign of infection. Take your baby to the vet asap and ask them to do a culture for yeast, staph and other bacteria. We just went through a yeast/staph infection right after our girl's ears were cropped. The vet put her on oral antibiotics and packed her ears with an antibiotic as well. Catching an infection early is important. Please let us know what the outcome is.

Again.. Vet visit is in order. Smelly ear is telling you that something is wrong. Good luck!

If the foul smell is coming for the actual ear itself you could be looking at an ear infection even a yeast over growth. If you are talking about the incision site chances are the area has become infected. I would take her to you vet to rule this out. One of the things that is a bit hard to do during the whole posting process is to keep the posting dry. If you puppy got her taping wet it could have been the perfect moist enviorment for bacteria to flurish.... hope this helps

Ear infectons are common especially if the weather is hot. It is important to change taping every 4 to 5 days in heat. Be sure when you change bandages that you clean the ear completely inside with an alcohol wipe and let dry throughly before reposting. Usually 20 minutes max. If they have an infections then the vet will need to give medicine first to get them healed. Good luck an dhope all is well.
