UDC Nationals for 2009 is now over. It has been a very busy week for the Mid Central Working Dobermans Club in Warrensburg as we hosted the UDC Natls. We kicked it off Sunday April 26th with a WAE and CGC's. Monday was protection/obedience seminar with Greg Doud. He is an awesome trainer and we all learned a ton.

Tues was temperament test for conformation and obedience on Wed and Thurs, Tracking, BH's, AD and Watch Dogs on Friday and ending with the IPO Trail on SAt. Our judge was Herr Werner Prignant (SP) from Germany and he was awesome. We had to get a translator but it was fun listening to the critiques in German and then the translater repeating in English. It was hardest for the translater as she was not familiar with Schutzhund terminology. We all had a great time.

I was talking to another trainer earlier today about how different dogs work and how a Doberman and a Rottweiler will lunge with there feet and mouth hitting at the same time while the Sheperds tuck there feet and hit with there mouths. Just wondered if you noticed the difference in there techniques at the trials.

Sounds really cool. I would love to attend one of these and just absorb all the information. And interesting that you all picked a German judge. I personally believe this is an important way of cross seeding information about the breed and the work is to have judges from different backgrounds. Germany is the powerhouse of working dogs. I find it interesting because I'm also into horses and horse sports and you find that Europeans are much more involved with their teams and there are lots more competitions etc. Germany rules in Dressage, another very disciplined sport. Wonder if it is in the water?

To answer your questions Big Dog - YES These wonderful crazy funny Dobermans hit feet first. I understand that the Boxer was named becasue it uses its front feet much like a Boxer - Had it not been for Herr Dobermann our dogs might just as well been called Boxers.

Since we know Rotties were used as part of the equation to create the Doberman they got the trait from them. I had not really noticed this of Rotties since I don't usually see them working. Our DVG club does have a Rottie but I guess I just never paid attention to this with them.

Jelly - we did get to have a question and answer period Friday night with Herr Prigandt and he said that one big difference is that in Germany every little town and burrough has a working dog club or training. That would be heaven for sure - Here we are very few and far inbetween so it is much harder to bring our dogs to the level the dogs in Germany are. The UDC does have a very strong holding in the NE with 3 very active clubs and our National Training Director - John Soares lives and trains there. I would love to be able to go spend a month up there training and working my dogs.

I do make a couple trips a year to Decatur, IL to work with Jose Rodriquez and Anne Rammelsburg. They are awesome but it is a 6 hours drive for me one way so required 2 night on the road expense figured into the training. I wish I were richer or we had a good helper around here.

You are welcome anytime. I think next year it will be held in New York. I was very disappointed this year as I had to pull Gunner since he got hurt 3 weeks before the trial. I had hoped to finish his UDC open. He got high last year but still needed 2 legs to finish but I did not want to take a chance on him getting hurt. He was mad he did not get to go.

Susan thanks for posting all of the results for the UDC Nationals. It is very interesting. I still need to get my membership form filled out and submitted.

Yes - do join. It is a wonderful club although small we are totally dedicated to preserving the working heritage of our Dobes. We need good people who care about this breed. They are THE ONLY breed to have a war memorial standing in Guam. A beautiful bronze statue by Susan Bahary of Colorado. It was on display at the DPCA centennial celebration. It gave me chills and then to watch the movie dedicated to the dog handlers of WWII. AWESOME!! Dobermans ROCK!!! Dobermans RULE!!!

Wow, would've loved to come and spectate. Can only hope that with time and patience I can bring Deano around to the point where he can begin to train for such events... To me this is the ultimate in the human-dog relationship, this level of trust, communication and respect, working together to achieve a goal. How could it be better?! :)
Unfortunately according to the UDC website there appear to be no clubs anywhere near me here in Columbus. Maybe someday. :(

It is true - there are only about 8 clubs total across the US. There are 2 in the NE one in the NW, one in CAL, on in NC, one in AR and ME!! The Mid Central Working Dobermans Club - . That is about it that is actually active. We have hosted the Nationals the last two years in a row. What a job as I was Natl Show chair both years for our club because I am president - I am taking a BREAK!! My members have threatened me with revolution if I volunteer us again!!!

It would not happen if it were not for a very few dedicated people across the country who came together and supported our club and Natls. The show chairs of each event really do by far the most work. I had a great group who took on their task and I basically could just forget it. They are very dependable wonderful folks to work with and I give them all the credit for the success of both Natls.

Unfortunately Schutzhund is a lot of time and work. In today instant gratification world it is not real exciting to work 2 or 3 years for 1 title. The good news is once you get the Sch I the other 2 are a breeze because basically you have already done it all in the one. Basically about the only things added at higher levels are things like the moving stand, and more blinds to search which does not make sense to me. Since they have to do by far the vast majority of it in the one they could just add the moving stand since it is not a biggie and more blinds and just call it a III> JMHO folks!!! They didn't ask my opinion but you all probably know me well enough by now to now I give it anyway.
