I recently contacted a breeder who appeared to have some very nice puppies available. I asked the normal questions to include a copy of the pedigree. the response was simply "if you want to see my pedigree you will have to come by my home" (in California) "you are apparently not aware of the fraudulence associated with sending pedigrees" WHAT??? Any opinions..I find it absurb. If the breeder is unable or unwilling to answer questions prior to the purchase will they be there after, should a problem arise? Most pedigrees can be downloaded from sites unless protected by copyright, can be researched on DobeQuest or for minimal $$ from AKC...Any thoughts, it screamed inexpierenced and I won't say the rest..

Tidibole I would have to agee. I always feel like "well what are you ashamed of" I post my pedigrees on the web. I want people to be able to get the info that they need to make an intelligent decision. People take pride in their pedigree. That is why all the fly by night registries have been successful. People buy a dog and then realize they dont' have a pedigree or papers and because it is important status symbol want to reg little foo foo or worse let breed little foo foo with no clue as to what goes into good breeding.

So CKC Continential Kennel Club (knock off of CKC Canadian Kennel Club) UKC Universal Kennel Club(knock off of United Kennel Club) APRI - close enough to AKC that people think they are getting a reg dog and don't realize it is useless and evidently several other fly by night registries.

Just like stated in other discussions here and AKC papers are wanted on a puppy that is not reg because they want to know the pedigree yet breed CKC and pass on dogs with no pedigree at least that can be verified anywhere. It does seem like a lot of double talk to me. But the fact is pedigrees are important more than just for the status symbol. It gives a history of the family tree which makes it easier to research health issues, temperament issues, working ability, show potential etc.

I have had several people bring me dud dogs to train. By that I mean no drives for working, showing nothing there to work with. The dog is basically a dead beat because of poor breeding. That is why good breeders care about what they produce and then pass on to others.

Breeders have fallen from grace because of these very issues. One bad apple gives the whole barrel a stench.

Hummm, makes one wonder. Most sites I've looked at (dobe & beagles) their pedigrees were posted or there was a link to read/dL the pedigree. Were you seriously considering purchasing a puppy?

Were you seriously considering purchasing a puppy? To some extent...I was very interested in the pedigree as that is my primary concern when I buy another puppy. I am predominately interested in the American lines as I am sure it would be complimnetary to my pedigree..My whole problemwith this breeder SIMPLY put, advertised a pedigree with 100 ch in x generations and failed to validate by refusing to forward a pedigree. The excuse was all of the "fraudulent useage of pedigrees" this person follows up her ad with "40 yrs of experience with Dobermans" blah, blah, blah...One seldom does or SHOULD buy a dog without first educating themselves on the pedigree. It enables one not only to review the conformation, etc of past dogs but also the potential health issues associated with each line. The pedigree on my male obviously as with others has the potential of certain issues. Since he has been bred, I had all appropriate health testing done prior to, as had the bitch. And concerned myself moreso with the testing that would be relevant to his line. I had a wonderful opportunity to speak to his breeder recently, a true ICON of the breed and she had candidly enlightened me in so many ways. When the time and/or the puppy arises, I will know it is what I want. this person did not have a website to view.

A pedigree is the entire history of a dog. It is a guideline if you will on what you are wanting to improve on. There are some very prominent dogs of the past that bring some very desireable traits to the table. They are known for passing on certain traits to their offspring. Hence, there are some dogs that are known to pass on things that are not desireable and/or you don't want to double up on.

I have spent hours and hours and months and months studying pedigrees and bloodlines on both sides of the continent. There is a wealth of info to anyone who want to do a little research. My hubby hates it when I get on the track of a certain pedigree because I find it so facinating I can pull myself away until I have tracked down every single dog and learned as much as possible. Then I know if I want to pick up some things from a particular pedigee.

I really don't see how you could fraudulently use a pedigree. The AKC papers state the sire and dam and any reputable breeder provides a 4 generation pedigree to families, plus there are too many places on the web where you can verifiy it for yourself. Or you can request a pedigree form AKC so all of which can very easily be verified. So I would beware myself. It has been my experience that people who worry about this kind of thing usually do so because they themselves are not as honest as they should be.
