I cook often for my dogs and thought it would be fun to share some favorite dog treat recipes.

Liver Brownies
1 pound liver
2 TBSP Garlic granules (yes...that's TABLESPOON not TEAspoon)
1 TBSP Onion powder (optional)
(We use artificial/non-onion stuff- used just for the flavor)
2 Eggs (or egg substitute to equal 2 eggs)
Rolled oats (NOT the "quick" kind)

Puree liver in food processor.
Add garlic, onion powder and two eggs.....puree till well mixed.
In VERY LARGE bowl, combine mixture from food processor and up to 5-6 cups of rolled oats (Remember.....NOT the quick-type).

Mix till rolled oats are well moistened.
Turn out onto a large, well-greased cookie sheet.

Press down (and out towards edges) till mixture is
evenly spread over the entire cookie sheet.
Make sure corners are filled well.

Bake in Med oven (300-degrees F) for approximately 15-20 minutes...or until
mixture is well set and doesn't come apart.
(It's done when it begins to pull away from the edges of the cookie sheet)
Cut into squares while still warm; loosen from cookie sheet. Store in
freezer bags after the "brownies" have cooled.

Dumb question....does the garlic/onion affect dog breath? If not, I may try the recipe. Yes Rhiannon, please post your dog biscuit recipe. I'm especially looking for a low cal biscuit one for my fat little beagle love.

SATIN BALLS FOR PUTTING WEIGHT ON YOUR DOG

INGREDIENTS:

a.. 10 pounds of cheap hamburger meat
b.. 1 large box of Total cereal
c.. 1 large box of oatmeal (uncooked)
d.. 1 jar of wheat germ
e.. 10 eggs
f.. 1-1/4 c. vegetable oil
g.. 1-1/4 c. unflavoured molasses
h.. 10 small packages of unflavored gelatin
i.. pinch of salt

DIRECTIONS: 1.. Mix all ingredients together well, much like a meatloaf
2.. Put into separate freezer bags and freeze, thawing out as needed.
3.. Make little meatballs and place them on top of the food

It puts weight on in a very short time not to mention adding gloss the coat.

Use it every day when showing -- does not produce diarrhea. It can be fed alone or, to save money, with their regular food.

If you are unable to obtain all the ingredients (i.e.-the molasses and the unflavoured gelatin), it will still work wonders on your dog. HOME<http://www.dpca-breedered.com/page1.htm>

I have since found feeding smaller increments of a regular diet 2 -3 times throughtout the day favorable over a longer period of time with better overall results...

Sue here are some links for some low calorie dog biscuits. And the garlic or onion seasoning either one is not a problem with my dog's breath. My dogs are obsessed with garlic and it is good for flea repellant and is good for the coat as well. And I have copied and pasted a recipe to fix that problem for you just in case. ;) And your dogs will never know the real reason they are getting this treat.

Bad Breath Banishers
2 cups brown rice flour
1 Tablespoon activated charcoal (find this at drugstores, not the briquets!)
3 Tablespoons canola oil
1 egg
1/2 cup chopped fresh mint
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley
2/3 cup lowfat milk
Preheat oven to 400F. Lightly oil a cookie sheet. Combine flour and charcoal. Add all the other ingredients.Drop teaspoonfulls on oiled sheet, about 1 inch apart. Bake 15-20 minutes. Store in airtight container in the refrigerator.

Low Fat Dog Cookies Recipe

Ingredients:
1-1/2 cups of hot water

1-1/2 tsp. beef or chicken bouillon powder

3 tablespoons olive oil (or vegetable oil)

3-1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1/2 cup cornmeal

1/2 cup celery, finely chopped

1/2 cup shredded carrots

1/4 cup green pepper, finely chopped

Optional: 1/2 tsp. garlic powder (or 1 finely minced clove) *see note below

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix hot water, oil and bouillon powder. Add flour, cornmeal and vegetables and mix well. Knead the dough on a floured surface for a minute or two. Roll out to 1/4" thick.

Cut into shapes (I used an inverted glass dipped in flour, then cut the circle in two to make half moon shapes) but bone-shaped cookies are cute.

Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degree for 30 minutes.

Let cool - even though your dog will probably be winding around your feet from the time you take the cookies out of the oven. Makes about 3-4 dozen cookies, depending on the size you cut. Store in the fridge, in an air tight container.

*Please note: There is an ongoing debate about giving garlic to dogs; some people say it is poisonous, while others believe it is a flea deterrant with many other health benefits. You can search Google to find out more. For this recipe, you can either include the garlic, or omit it, according to your preference and what you feel is best for your dogs.

After all this talk about dog treats, I remembered one that I had not done in years but since I had some hot dogs left I did them. Very simple, works well as a obedience treat and CHEAP.

1 package of hot dogs, preferably the plump, but any will do

Cut into 1/4 inch pieces

Place singly arranged on a Microwave plate covered with paper towel

Microwave for 6-10 minutes. (they should be on the crisp side)

They are not greasy and can easily be broken into pieces for motivation. Refrigerate in container.

The one thing I remember liking about those treats versus the liver based is if a dog isn't used to liver it can creat a bit of loose stool. But weinies...NEVER>>.
