The dads get all the breaks!! Here we have been up all night rotating puppies so everyone gets to eat while Dad is lounging on the couch. Tidibole it is now your turn tonight!!!

Yes all health testing is done - Mom is Vwd clear, ofa excellent, elbows normal, thyroid normal, cerf normal, holter 12-08 normal. Momma is RED all puppies are BLACK. We are hoping for a couple very nice show prospects. All puppies have been placed for some time so this is not a sneaky way to advertise puppies available. I will try to get some pictures today.

I am as anxious as anyone. But I know they are coming soon. The tails were done and she said they were big "babies" whined, etc. I was hoping for red male in the litter, as mom is red but, YEAH, no temptation for me. ALL BLACK!!!

Ok guys I am still struggling with camera/computer. So I am giving a link to Eika's litter last year so you can see some tiny puppies. I will get them posted as soon as I can. They were 1 week old Friday. http://jbarsdobies.com/EikaPups.htm This is the best I can do for now. I am working on the problem and will update as soon as possible.

Ok I am struggling still with the computer issues but here are a couple pictures of my Eika/Tyson babies at 1 day (I put my cell phone down next to them to give you and idea of how tiny they are) and 4 days. 10 Little Dobies all doing well and growing like weeds. they are 2 weeks now and are now eating solid food - I don't konw how I will ever pick which one I want to keep they are all precious. Hope you enjoy!!!

How precious. If you can't decide which one, just wrap them all up and send on to me. LOL. I bet you are having a ball with them.

Yes I am - they are the fattiest little munchkins I have ever had. Yesterday was their first day to be introduced to food and NO problem. They ate like pros. Eyes are now open and they will be hearing this week. Lots of changes taking place. I will try to get some more pictures soon.

I do have 6 boys to choose from so should have a real show prospect in there - at least I sure do hope so. At one day old they were getting out of the extra bed I had them in beside the whelping box and climbing back in with momma. I have never had a litter at one day old do that. Since there were 10 I kept half with momma and half in a basket beside her and change them every hour around the clock for the first week so all get a good chance to eat. These guys decided they would decide when they should be changed. The first time I freaked out when I went to change them and only had 3 in the basket.

Puppies are 3 weeks old today and eating solid food. This week they will start 3 meals a day. I am excited and although all puppies are placed I am going to hold a couple back for show homes not including the one I am keeping. I will be taking them to Illinois at 8 weeks for a second and third opinion on show prospects - The stud owner is friends with a long time show breeder who loves the pedigree and will give their opinion on the munchkins. Here are a couple updated pictures. - I finally got my computer to cooperate.

Knowing nothing about show prospects, I'm curious. I'm probably wrong but would think that even conformation might be hard to judge at that age. But besides that, what are the most important things you look for to pick?

Puppies are hard for sure - At 8 weeks what you see is what you should get when the puppy is older. So you start evaluating at the head and work your way back. Head planes, ear set, eye set, eye shape, eye color, overall markings, teeth, nose under jaw (a big problem in our breed) and goes right along with bone density, neck and how it ties into the topline, topline, shoulder angulation, shoulder layback, elbows tight, tight feet, tail set, croup, rear angultion, short back, overall porportion - and # 1 temperament and recovery time. In otherwords if all that is correct or close to correct at 8 weeks, even if they loose it - it should come back. At that point I like to take two of each sex and hold them back to 12 weeks and reevaluate. I have found the most drastic changes dureing this period. Some puppies will just go south on you at this point and then I select between the two males and two females I like best for show homes.

In this case if there is a really nice male I plan to keep him and place the female if I find a good show home. It was a clear to clear breeding as I won't breed affected puppies. It is a definite risk and there are enough things that can go wrong without intentionally causing a potential problem.

But there are things I am watching for even at birth - good weight, overall tight puppies, vigorious, are good signs of things to come. Even the best pedigrees are a gamble. Sometimes the best pedigrees just don't cross right, but when you have a litter where it all clicks then you have some outstanding puppies and so far that is what I am seeing.

That's what we do when picking our beagle litter too but of course for different goals. After conformation, I always look for problem solving skills in puppies, stamina, curiosity, how it works within the "pack" litter, etc. Fun to evaluate, tough to accurately pick sometimes. We've found the same on pedigree crosses, we've had some crosses we thought would be great, but didn't quite hold up. It is not as simple as some might think to build a good breeding foundation. Good luck on your prospects!

Thanks Sue - It is always a gamble - I like to try to stack the deck in my favor to it the best chance to win. I spent a year trying to decide which direction I wanted to go with this breeding. Did I want to double up on working or did I want to double up on show but I knew I wanted to look for a little ARG. blood to bring in but not too heavy and I did not want to go to the most popular sire as it is the same old same old. Too over angulated and too over done, definitely not good for working.

My foundation bitch was heavy Marienburg on the bottom side going back to Dexter and I am a long time admirer of Mary Rogers. She has been very innovative in her program being one of the first to bring in Dexter Von Franckenhorst - I LOVE that dog - very solid temperaments, longevity and Mary had great success with adding him to her program and still keeping conformation while gaining a stronger temperament. Then she was one of the first again to go to Lex Luthor and Repo Man put that line on the market.

Unfortunatley it did not bring in the health - instead we got liver problems and eye problems and grossly over angulated so IMO a little goes a long way, To me it is worth it for the things I hope to gain and side step the other. Vwd clear is also important to me and that eliminated many from consideration. So I chose a little Arg that goes back to Dexter 4 times. It would be hard to go to far wrong with that kind of pedigree behind the puppies. It also added the strength of my English breeding on the dam's side.

Here are a couple updated pictures of the puppies. They are 4 weeks old. Really starting to show personalities now. They had played off an on all day and are really starting to move around and run. As you can see it was a big day - they are all pooped out!!! (I wish)
