Hello all, I found this forum due to a recent addition to my family. Lukah, a beautiful chocolate dobie puppy with green eyes. I found him Sunday while on patrol and he came right to me. He has natural ears and they will be kept this way, they are just so fun to play with. He has an injured front leg that my vet is tending to, and he is back on the road to playing and lounging. I will post pictures as soon as I can. I did not know dobies had green eyes, is this right? He is so lovable and playful, I just don't understand how someone could have dumped him off on a lonely road like that. Oh well, He's Mine Now and I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. :p

Dobes have black, dark brown, rust or amber eyes. I am not familiar with any that have green eyes. - Please post pictures we would love to see him and so glad you were able to save him. How sad for someone to just dump the poor baby.

I think the ECONOMY is making people do strange things. I just watched a Channel 9 program discussing the "dumping and abandoment" of horses. I am almost sure it specifically stated California for the program but I have heard it is an issue everywhere. They end up on the interstate and the rest dosen't need to be said. I remember many years ago in Pittsburg, CALIFORNIA TWO 8 week old docked Dobe puppies were placed into a Purina Puppy Chow bag (the top tied) and thrown from a car window at 50 mph. They both survived and I was lucky to keep one, the other also found a home. I had him cropped, my preference, rescue or not. He lived until 6 at which time Cardio took him quickly, within 3 days. Much luck with the new one...It is wonderful for every unthinking person there is someone like you.

I just saw someone mentioning eye color on another forum last night. My guess would be the pup is Z factored, meaning one parent is white or a white gene carrier. White Dobermans have blue eyes...so a white carrier could carry that trait also..Red Dobermans have amber (yellowish) eye... breeding the two, wouldn't you get green eyed pups? (basic art: blue & yellow make green)

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your puppy. Yes, post pics soon. How old do you think he is?

FL Dobes - I see why you would think that blue and yellow mixed would create green but unless I misunderstand it the genes don't comingle or mix together. So the dog would either have blue eyes (which can't happen since it ss dilute and amber would be dominate - at least that is the way I understand it. They would get one gene from each parent so they would get a blue gene only from the albino and amber from the other unless it was a Z factor in which I am assuming that they would carry the blue gene also so could get a blue eyed dog. - Please correct me if I am wrong on this.
Regardless a big thank you to Dobie Lover16 for saving one of God's creatures.
Good for you for saving that dog! People are so mean sometimes. We would love to see pictures.
Welcome to DH.

That's what I'm trying to figure out! Red is not a dilute. Albino is not a dilute!
A Z Factored Black or Red is not a dilute, but do carry the Albino gene.
So again, where would Green eyes come from? It has to be genetics!
With the Albino, you'd have blue/blue-ish eyes, so why is it not possible for a colored Z factored dog to carry that trait just not outwardly?
A red Z factored dog that outwardly appears red still has Albino genetics. NO? A red typically has amber to golden brown eyes? So with the Albino genetics, is there not the possibility of green eyes?

Fl Dobes - If I understand you question why is is not possible for a z factored to carry that gene and the answer is - if they got the albino gene from one of the parents but not the other then they do carry the gene. If the Z factored is from two z factors say black or red then they might not carry the gene at all if they got both the normal genes from their parents - it is kinda like Vwd. To be albino you have to get both albino genes from the parents to be albino. If one parent is white then all puppies will be z factored and carry the gene but not be albino themselves but bred to z factored that does carry the gene also can produce whites.

I was trying to figure out where green eyes would come from.
Let's see if I can type this it (hopefully) makes sense.
You said the genes don't co-mingle, but isn't that what give each dog their individual traits (blended genes)?
One parent black that carries the white gene, the other parent red/Z free. If a pup gets the Z gene from the one parent and the red gene from the other, is it totally impossible that a pup produced from that pair have both red and white traits?
My father had blue eyes, my mother had brown eyes, mine are hazel (both). Isn't this similar?

If he's really young the eyes could appear a bit on the greenish side no? But that would be a very young pup. Anyways, you really should try to find the owner or at least let place an add saying you found a pup but not say the breed etc. That way you can be sure to bypass any people who just want to claim a dobie pup that isn't really theirs. I'm only saying this as I lost my dobe years and years ago....he was about 6 months of age. I hate to think of what possible fate befell him....ie: used to train pitbulls, or puppy mill producer or who know's what. All I can say is that I was totally broken hearted over it. It still brings tears to my eyes even all these years later. I'd have rather he been found dead that to have no idea what happened to him. I lost him around the Beaumont area in Texas, he had been on a farm about 15 miles or so from Beaumont. All that was found was his collar. My vet posted around for us and because he had some unique traits he gave all the vets in a hundred mile radius a precise description. I never got him back. I'm not saying that he wasn't purposely dumped..but there is a possibility that he was lost during an outing or any other possible scenario. Not every stray dog you find was necessarily abandoned.
