Our puppy has had his first shots and he is up to date on wormings...someone told me that you are not to take the pup out until he has ALL shots:confused:...we took all the pups I had while growing up out for little walks and allowed them to play in the yard a bit. I want to do what is best for Beckham so I was curious if anyone else has heard of keeping them out of public until fully vaccinated.
Thanks!

Parvo did not rear its ugly head until the middle to late 70's - so back in the old day so could take puppies anywhere - not so today. I personally give my puppies Neo Par shot
which is a live vaccine and have never had a parvo breakthrough. The puppy vaccine 5 in one is at best only 75% effective even after all shots. So here is the plan. Take the puppy places but not were a lot of other dogs go. Keep the puppy in full sunlight areas as much as possble not shaded areas. Don't let them down in areas where there is other dog poop. Concrete areas in sun are OK. Usually at 16 weeks you can go anywhere.

Thank you - I hope the vet carries it. I give my puppies their first parvo at 5 weeks and then first puppy shot at 6 weeks and another neo par at 7 weeks.

We do not take our pups out in public until all shots are completed. With that said though, of course they had to go to the vet. I get really upset with people who bring their sick dogs to the vet and then want to let them visit with other people's dogs. I never let pups come in contact with other dogs at the vet (left them in the car until time to go in, don't sit in waiting room with them and definately took care where I put them down if they had to potty). I usually scan the waiting room before I even take my adults inside and have been known to quickly go outside when someone brough their dogs in that looked sick. I've had people approach us outside while I'm backing away and say idiotic stuff like "oh my dog just wants to sniff yours and make friends" right after I've seen their dog throw up. I don't care if they think I'm stuck up or not, I refuse to allow that. I think a lot of people believe the vet's office is a place to socialize a dog and at times it may be, but first and foremost health comes first. WOW! I really got on my soap box didn't I? I'll get off it now. LOL
I have felt the same way when going to the vet. Although, usually the people want to keep their dog way away from the "doberman." which is way cool with me, except I hate the stigma.
I would never take my pup around other dogs without all it's shots, except to the vet, of course.
Thanks for the information on the sun, didn't know this.

My thought on being around other dogs - These are just my thoughts and what I have experienced - A dog has to be exposed to things or they can't develop their own immune system. This does not mean that I want them rolling and playing with a sick dog but to pass it in the vets office has never bothered me. Same with me - people come in with a cold and they say so sorry - I say no problem - I almost never get a cold but go anywhere I want and dont' worry about it.
I think one reason our dogs have so many problems today is we baby them way too much. My dogs drink our well water - I DO NOT BUY bottled water for my dogs. My dogs don't get sick either. They get their puppy shots and never get another vaccination except when rabies is forced on me.
