There are guidelines for dog food. I do not ever recommend a puppy food for puppies. it can lead to serious bone and joint problems later in life one being it is thought to contribute to wobblers because of the increased rapid growth. You also don't want to give them calcium for the same reason. The first two ingredients should be a specific meat meal - ex: chicken, beef, lamb etc. and the second brown rice - dog foods with corn in them are known skin allergens. Keep the protein content low rather than high especially in a growing puppy. Just the opposite of what dog food companies have crammed down our throats for years. There are foods that are not too expensive but much better than commercial wal- mart brands.

IMO that would be better than Purina one.

I feed Renic Purina Pro Plan, always have, always will! I had about 7 doberman breeders that show recommend it to me. I feed the Chicken formula with "real" chicken chunks. I have never had problem with stool, his coat is gorgeous, his teeth are white, he is never sick, and he maintains his weight on it well.
I also feed satin balls to help give him an edge before a show. he loves those!

I think most dogs can do well on most anything. I also think that if I choose to, I could survive and most likely be fairly healthy eating pizza, chocoloate and soda. I could run around and work off the pounds but still look healthy.
That dosn't mean that it is what is best for me. I figure I want to give my dogs the best I can. and the best I can give my dogs right now, is what I feed. Dosn't mean that is the best for someone else, but it works for us, and I feel I am doing all that I can to make him happy and healthy.

im in the same boat...i remember when they 1st got the lab....she was 4 mnths old and had been abandoned because she had parvo...they brought her home and i remember they tried atleast a dozen dog food brands.....purina, pedigree, iams, everything...it just made her sick....for whatever reason they tried the store brand and sure enough....it worked...im sure their are positives to the expensive brands.....but i doubt the cheaper stuff is as bad as ppl seem to make it out to be...10 yrs, healthy is a long time for a lab, esp one that had parvo

What do you feed your puppies when weening them from the mother? And later when they can eat dry?
