View Full Version : Ignoring Behavior
I was wondering what behavior you correct on your dog AND what behavior you ignore? And why?

Sometimes ignore is correction, depending on the behavior. I guess I "correct" leash behavior (pulling, barking at other dogs etc). Most of this correction is a reversal of course, or a touch on the side. I also "correct" if they break or ignore a command (down, stay, wait) by just putting them back over and over till they do it right. I'm not sure if that is correction or ignoring because I don't do anything about the break except put them back to where they should be. I ignore or remove them from bad behavior in the house (ie bedspread is not a tug toy).

No expert here- but depends on the age of the dog. With puppies I ignore or remove them. I ignore when they want to play and I'm done or they want attention and I'm not giving it at that time. Also ignore when they want a treat and haven't earned it and things like that However mine are older now so they pretty much know those rules. I correct with a "NO", "atttttt" if necessary and sending them away from whatever they are doing that isn't allowed. At times I snap my fingers and they know they they are to pay attention. On leash I correct with a change in direction, light touch sometimes and occasionally a quick leash snap for pulling, etc. I'm never rough with any of our dogs, but I can be pretty firm with my voice. I think it's easier to affirm positive behavior and gets ya further than correcting however, I believe there are some behaviors that shouldn't/can't be ignored.

I'm not 100% sure of what you mean as far as ignoring a behavior? If a dog is given a command and it doesn't follow it there is a correction now that can be a touch, verbal or a leash correction. Obviously we let puppies be puppies and I have always believed and do train with the least amount of force possible. We do not train dogs with an Iron hand and Dobes especially do not train well with this technique. I believe a dog that is given a command should always obey the command as this may some day save his life! A dog that is overly aggressive and what some refer to as a red zone needs to be dealt with quickly and as calmly as possible this is the type of dog that goes into a blind rage do we use a firm hand at this point yes but never to the point of being abusive just enough to establish control which makes him safe to handle and keeps us safe also. So in retrospect do we ignore certain behaviors yes as long as they are not obsessed with it like licking or barking that is just being a dog. Ignoring a command always some type of correction.
I don't use harsh corrections either but just wondered how much you ignore in training your dogs. Dobermans are so wanting to please us. The train me everyday. Lol.
Puppies are a whole different story and I agree there is a difference.
