Gunner is back at home. He has about a 4 inch gash right across the shoulder blade and down towards the leg. He has 9 steel staples. I will be putting his neck pillow on tonight so he does not chew out the stitches. They gave him cortisone so when he goes out to pee it goes for 5 to 10 minutes - Just dribble. Will be glad when he is back to normal. He will celebrate his 6th B'day Monday as an outpatient. Poor boy.
Jona said he is the very best patient. Just laid and watch all the activity calmly and when they came with the leash to take him out he got right up and stood for them to put his leash on. He is feeling pretty good because he does not want to go slow.

Thank you all for your kind words - I can't tell you how much it is appreciated. I am just so glad to have my Gunny boy back home. I can't tell you how much he was missed. Now on to R & R.

Thanks Jelly8bean - He did have a rough day yesterday - Dr does not want him on too much pain meds because he KNOWS Gunner will try to be his normal self. As soon as I get the leash he is up and ready to go. I did give him meds last night to help him sleep.
I know he does not feel good because he did not get up on the bed but stayed on the floor. My poor boy's shoulder looks like it has been through a meat grinder. All swollen and puffy. I will be so glad when it has healed enough that he is not in any pain.
I know it is heartbreaking when our babies are hurt. It is good that he is with you, so many dogs don't have the care they deserve. We will all be looking to his FULL recovery. Best Wishes.

RKCM - thank you so much - how on earth can I get to UKC when he keeps getting injured. That boy is a ball of fire. I will hopefully have Shrock ready soon - if he was ready now I could at least go ahead and show one of them.

Gunner is getting better every day. Last night when I took him out for the last trip he was on full charge. Looking for the wild cats that live out here - he was so excited he slipped his collar and started to take off looking for cats. I freaked - My first thought was he is going to tear his shoulder out - So I said PLOTZ!! and down he went. Shaking but calm I walked over to him and put his collar back on and put him in the kennel to do his duty - I LOVE obedience training. You just never know when it will pay off.
Now the battle begins to keep him quiet. He is wanting to run and run and is really feeling being confined. I have another week and a half to go.

Another example of what time and energy put into obedience will do for you. Don't you love training in German. Good luck with trying to keep him quiet I know it's hard we went through that once with a busted hip it's hard to keep those boys down as the vet always tells me there pain tolerance is so high that it's a blessing sometimes and a curse other times.

Thank you Big Dogs - without the training I am sure last night we would have been out there in the dark running helter skelter chasing cats until he had done serious damage. No pain pills today for that boy. He will just have to tough it out after that. He has rawhides, knuckle bones and his blanket. He will just have to be happy with that for a while longer. I can also put him in the van when it is cool and leave him there. They all settle down in the van because they know if it leaves they are going. I tell you these dogs are too darn smart.

I am glad too. He is such a happy boy and you can just ask him to do anything and he is up for it. I just wish I could make him understand that I NEED him to stay quiet for another 10 days and then he can go out and run and rip. The vet thought he owuld have a very quick recovery. If so we will be hunting shows to complete is open.

Thank you Janterra - I so appreciate all the postive thoughts and good wishes. Keeping him quiet is the problem at this point. If we make it it will be a minor miracle. He almost knocked me down today trying to get outside. The brat.

Hey glad he is home and on the mend. Sorry I did not get on the forums sooner to see that he is home and doing very well. Isn't that the truth trying to keep a dog quiet and down......good luck with that......LOL. I know how my dogs can be.......Give him hugs and slurpies from our dogs.

After doing the months of quiet for the heartworm treatment I know, l know. And now it looks like my rottie is going to have to have surgery on the other leg for the CCL again. All this vet work, and all these frustrated dogs... well at least they do recover and in the big picture it is such a small part of their lives. :)

Jelly8bean- so sorry to hear that you are going to have surgery on the other leg for CCL. Gosh hope all goes well for you guys. I keep telling Gunner just hang on we will run again just hang in there. It seems to be one of the few things he does not understand.

Jelly sorry to hear about the surgery and your right it is just a small part of there lives. The great thing about this is they have an owner who will make the sacrifice of time and money to allow them to live full lives and for that you should be commended because unfortunately there are others out there who would not make the sacrifice. So for your dogs I will say thank you.
