What release word do you all most use? I've used "free" but now use "Ok'. However, I've heard this is not a good word because it does come up in conversation. Not sure how to fix this or if it really needs fixing. (sometimes I think just my body and tone are the key, not the actual word).

I use free dog - I over use OK too many times for it to work for me. If they do good I ususally slip out OK that was great -- OK lets got OK we are done. so it just does not work for me. I am too set in my ways. So it was easier for me to use Free Dog for my release _ I also usually clap my hands together one time. I want it exact - and only when I am ready for them to release so a specific set of words works best in my situation.

Humm.. not to be confusing.. but I mean from a command, like stay, sit, heel.

That is what I thought when an exercise is over and it is OK for the dog to move - THAT release word right??? For that I use Free Dog.

I could swear somebody here told me it was not a good idea :o but I have used 'OK' to release Deano from his automatic/sits. I like it in our urban environment as when we stop at a street crossing I want him sitting and not moving until I release him, not even when I start- because sometimes I have to stop quickly and I don't want him running into myself or my wife, causing a pile-up!

The reason for not using ok is that so many people use it as a release word or in other situations your dog can be released from a stay command by someone else or yourself just in normal conversation which in competition when several people are in different rings saying ok dogs can sometimes think it's you or in the worst case scenario your dog gets released inadvertently into a dangerous situation. We used to train with the release word Frie which is the German word for free but with the increase in German trained dogs we let the customer come up with the word especially if the dog is being trained for protection work.
