Good deal! Hey, Rich, in your opinion, and any other knowledge you may have on this- how old should a pup be before starting endurance training? I mean, I thought I would start walking her a mile a day, and work from there to increase length and eventually increase to running vs. walking. She is 15 weeks now.

I waited until Magnum was done most of his growing before I started running regularly with him. Having said that, I started to run with him when he was 1 year old, but short distances and only a couple times a month.

I'm sure you will find, as I did, that building her endurance wont be an issue. Magnum and I can run 5k in just over 20 minutes, and he is never really running as much as he is trotting.

Now that the weather is starting to get cooler, I'll start taking him on more 7k runs and a few 10k (don't worry...I take water for both of us).

When you start running with her be sure to show us a picture. Good luck!

Rich it's kind of fascinating too look down when your running and realize just how effortless it is for them to move at that pace and then realize just how fast they really are. I really like the way magnum is keeping his attention on you while you guys are running, great picture. Also great advice on not endurance running until 1yr old we don't due any great stressful work until 1yr old it prevents injuries and allows growth plates to mature and stabilize.

Great pic. No wonder Magnum stays in good shape.

Rich,
What did you use to tie him to you? Just a rope to your belt? I love to jog with Olive but having the leash in my hand gets cumbersome...

I just put the leash around my waist. The leash I use is a little longer than the typical length. It really works well.

No wonder they say "People having dogs live 3 years more than those who don't."
Actually, almost everyone in our house has lost some weight since we got our doberman.

Very impressive to run and survive afterwards. Running is just not my thing but I sure do recognize the dedication and training required. My hats off to you.

Usuallly growth plates are considered closed at 18 months so I would not run on concrete or for any extended time prior to that. I am probably overly conscious because I will not start mine jumping til 18 months at least. They don't have to worry about me running with them - they are safe for sure.
