took brody to vet today, he has been shaking his head for a couple of days. he has ulcers in both ears!!! how in the heck did that happen????? gave his steroid antibiotic drops and special cleaning solution for his ears. Do Dobes suffer from ear problems? I clean his ears once a month but just use water on a gauze pad. any suggestions?

By ulcers do you mean open sores??? Are they down in the ear or on the inside where you can see them??? What did the vet think caused them I have never heard or seen ulcers in the ear.
I clean with alcholol as it removes ear oil which often holds the dirt in. I have cleaned with Alcohol for years and never had a single problem.
Dobes with cropped ears have less ear problems than dobes with floppy ears IMHO. They are not necessarily known for having ear problems.

ulcer down in the ear in one ear and deep red and irritated in the other. That is what i thought that they dont get ear infections. well the vet said she thinks he might have allergies!! that humans get syptoms in our nose dogs in their ears......weird

I have a 12 year old Basset, who has had and occassionally continues to have ear issues, like one would expect. I use WITCH HAZEL to clean ears as it generally does not having the drying and ultimatley irritating dryness and itching associated with Alcohol...I personally do not believe it has to do with FLOPPY or erect but rather the size of the opening of the ear canal as well as the the thickness of the ear leather. Should also add that I have WEIMS with FLOPPY ears and NEVER have I had a problem with them.

Indigo had a fungus infection in one ear that cleared right up with a round of drops. I clean her ears regularly. Sara has never had an issue with her ears. I worry more about mine because they have floppy natural ears and that could trap moisture etc. I have never heard of ulcers in the ears either.

Tnsteelerfan - Glad to hear he is better. It sounds like it is way down in the ear canal so cleaning might not even be the issue as you can't reach it. Hope you all figure out what it is and get it corrected. I have just never heard of allergies that affect the ears in this way.

dobs4ver, I have been researching it and not found much. he is on orijen which is great food. so not sure if it is to that. He is not trying to scratch as much and the vet told me to wait till monday and then wash his ears out. I am just so glad I took him. he is right beside me on the couch as I type. he is such a good boy :-)

It just might be a freak thing and he might never have a problem again. We certainly hope so.
