Hey guys. I picked up Bambi (my new pup) yesterday, and I'm trying to potty train her of course. She's ten weeks old. I've laid out newspaper near the doors, and I'm also taking her out first thing in the morning and then 3 or 4 times during the day. Is that often enough? Will she learn to go outside if I just keeping taking her out? Or is there some trick to letting her know that I want her to do her business outside?

Last night she peed on my bed around 3am. Should I be taking her outside during the night too?

What about using the newspaper? Is that helping or hurting her in learning to use the bathroom outside?

How did you guys train your pups? Thanks in advance!

Good work. I appreciate your commitment. First ask these questions to yourself, Has there been a change in the household? Did someone or a pet move in or move out? Have you had guests? Is there a new item in the house, such as carpet, furniture or clothing? To solve this have your dog checked by a veterinarian for any medical issues. Remove, if appropriate, the thing that is causing your dog’s anxiety. Don't use newspaper to clean. Clean with a 1:4 vinegar water solution or specially formulated urine odor eliminator to discourage repeats.

Roses, he just got his new puppy Saturday, so of course the household has changed....

Dobie, training your puppy to go outside to do her business is a big job. You're doing great right now. Personally, I would not take her out during the night. As she grows, she'll be able to go long between wettings and will be able to hold it throughout the night. In the meantime, the newspaper is a good option.

I think you should get up throughout the night. Puppy needs to know that she always goes outside to do her business. With puppies there are no gray areas. A few weeks of interrupted sleep is well worth the end result.

Thanks for your comments. I think even I have to follow your instructions as I am going to get a new baby Doberman next week! :)
