Sophia has had Demodectic mange for a few months now. We took her to our vet for the sulphar dips every two weeks, and they prescribed antibiotics. None of this has helped her. Now it is on her neck and front legs. I feel so bad for her, she looks horrible, but still is the same fun loving goofy Dobi we have had from day one. I give her baths twice a week becasue she smells horrible around her facial area. What can i do for her? Will this ever go away? And in case anybody suggest this, I have called the breeder, she wont help.

I am sorry to hear that the breeder won't help you. It is my understanding that vets are now treating it with Ivermectin and having a good success rate. Contact your vet and ask if they are aware of treatment and would they help you try it.

I am including a couple of links for you to check out.

Let us know what you find out from your vet. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Good luck.

I am hoping that it works well for you. I still suggest that you contact your vet for proper help in dosing your girl. I would not feel comfortable suggesting a dosing rate as I am not a vet. It is okay to administer orally as that is what we do when we are dosing for the monthly heartworm prevention.

I am not sure how long you have to treat for as we have never had this issue to deal with.

I am not sure how long you would use the ivomec to treat the problem you have. This is why I would talk to your vet. Dosing is okay to do orally you do not have to inject it for it to work. I do believe that the links I sent suggested 1/10th of a cc per 10 pounds of body weight.

Ivermectin should not be used in combination with valium or related tranquilizers (the infinitesimal doses used in the heartworm preventives excepted). It should not be used in conjunction with Amitraz (Mitaban©) dips nor with Amitraz tick prevention collars (Preventic© collars). These medications are all members of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor group and when they used together their effects add together creating sedation and adverse neurologic effects.

This is one warning associated with the use of Ivermectin....so I cannot stress enough the importance of talking about treatment for Sophie with your vet.

Keep us posted.
