Hello folks,
I am new to this forum and I am considering buying either a Doberman or a German Pinscher. I love both breeds and I haven't made up my mind just yet. Hopefully feedback and comments of knowledgeable people here can stear me in the right direction.
I am married and have a 3.5 year old daughter. At the moment I am finishing up Orthodox Christian Seminary and serving the Orthodox Church as a Deacon in Massachusetts. After I am done with seminary I expect to be ordained to the priesthood and my family will make a move to wherever I am needed by the Church. I was hoping to buy a dog either before I get assigned or shortly thereafter. Since I do not want to rush into doing this I started doing my research now. About a year to a year and a half early. I figure this will give us time to learn more about the breeds and figure out if this dog is right for us and we are right for it.
One thing that I can say is that I will in fact be home a lot. As a priest/deacon you don't go to work every morning, but rather serve certain weekly services and do hospital/nursing home visitations. This kind of schedule will give me plenty of time to take care of the new puppy. I expect I will be in a decent size house, so that will not be an issue.
We are looking for a dog that will be a loyal companion to the whole family including children. A dog that will not bite visitors, but also a dog who can protect the family in time of need.
Is the Dobe right for us?
What are some things I should know about the breed?
How is a German Pinscher different other than the size?
Please feel free to reply with any and all suggestions.
