I use a measuring container as a food scoop. My dobe is a year & a half old. I feed once daily, how much (in cups) should I feed him daily?

Depends on size and activity. My girls are all feed two times a day, because it has been shown to help with bloat prevention. I feed them about 1-1/2 cups each feeding for a total of 3 cups a day. They are generally active and run around with each other, but no other real stress on the system.

My four year old female was not given full access to food by the 'breeder' because she was the runt, and she has always been focused on food. She is very obedient and sweet as can be but if I let her, she would eat all day long.
At 60 lbs, we give her 1 1/3 cups twice a day. She is healthy but always wants more. Our male is a nibbler. If the female wouldn't scarf his food, we could put his daily ration in the bowl and he always saves some to be eaten when we eat. But not with little Miss 'Hoover' around.
Any suggestions on diet or behavior modification ??

I haven't found a way to do anything about the hoover and the nibbler. My rottie is a nibbler and she has just learned to eat quick, cause if she leaves it , it's gone!

We probably feed our girl too much but she just snarfs it down and never seems to gain any weight. We feed her 3 cups of food twice a day. Sometimes she eats it all and sometimes she leaves it but until she starts gaining weight then I think we're okay. On the back of the food that you buy there should be a feeding chart with the weight of the dog and how many cups to feed.

We feed about 2 1/2 cups twice a day with no activity 1hour before and 2hours after to help prevent bloat. Although the birds of prey as I like to call them at feeding time like to clean up and inspect other bags of food from dogs in the kennel when we feed.

Apollo's food is down for him all day I start with 2 1/2 cups in the morning and I fill in the afternoon but he eats when he wants to through the course of the day but it's gone by the end of the day if he gets more excersie I give him more, our mini schnauzer eats the same way.

It is recommended due to bloat that the be fed twice a day so I have always followed that guideline. I don't necessarily go by what is on the back of the food as it is a general guideline and just like people dogs are all different.

A good guide is to look at the dog and see if you see ribs - if you see them easily then the dog needs more food twice a day. If you just see a hint of ribs the dog is about right. I have some that eat 3 cups twice a day and some I only give 2 cups twice a day.

I may need to feed twice a day. We have always fed at night only. The dogs get lost of exercise but rest for the night after feeding. So far we have never seen bloat. Not sure if this is the reason.

I'm always open to changing things but thought once a day was better. Teresa Nail recently had me feed Dagger twice a day to put the weight on evenly. I took too much weight off him for the shows. He is a eater and it is only a tiny bit of weight she wanted.

I do agree with 4ever, the amounts differ with the dogs. I also liked to feel the rear of the dog....if I see bones, they are too skinny. I also don't like to see the spine on the topline or ribs......I think they should be thin and muscular but some dogs are just too skinny for me. Too fat is not healthy either. It's a judgement call........

I think it depends on the food you use. I feed Mine 3 cups a day. 1 1/2 twice a day of taste of the wild samon flavor and have had great luck with it. My blue doberman has a great coat from it!

What brand named food are you feeding???? What you feed has alot to do with the amount given. I feed twice a day in the winter and once in the summer because in Florida the summer heat doesn't allow for the same amount of exercise as the other months offer. My dog will be three yrs. at the end of Feb. and eats 3 1/2 cups at the one serving a day meal (with meats)and 2 cups at the twice a day meal with some fruit treats given during the day. As Big Dog commented I never exercise after a meal and never feed if the dog has just been exercised or worked. Water is avakible at all times with the amount very small before and after meals for an hour or so.

William, that doesn't sound like very much food for an active breed. Do you add meats and veggies? Von
