Is there any dog food that is best recommended for Dobermans? I currently have Sadie on Royal Canine Maxi for Coat and Joint. She seems to really like it but I am just wondering if this is the "Best" food. Although she's just a 14 months old she seems to be a little leaner than I've seen other Dobermans her age. She has been vetted and is in great health so I'm sure its not a health issue.

Mercedes Royal Canine is some very good dog food. I currently use Purina Pro Plan for large breed puppies and then my show dogs are eating the Purina Pro Plan Shreds. Sometimes you will see some puppies that tend to be a little leaner because their metabolism is different just like some people are leaner than others. You could always add some yogurt (plain), cottage cheese. And we also take ground beef and total cereal etc and make magic meat balls. You could always just add one or two of those to her normal food ration to see if that gives her the extra that you would like to see on her. I will find the recipe and post it in a post to follow. Give it a try. Many breeders use these to keep dogs in ideal weight for the show ring. I have not really seen any dog food out there specifically formulated for dobermans but will do some research to see what I can find out. I used to rep for different dog food companies and there are a lot of good foods out there.

Here’s a good recipe for dogs that have trouble putting on or keeping weight on due to illness, age or prior neglect. Many rescues use these when they take in dogs that are severely malnutritioned. They will cause rapid weight gain so monitor the dog to make sure he/she is not gaining too much weigh too rapidly.

Satin Balls
•5 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
•1/2 lg. box of Total cereal
•1/2 lg. box oatmeal
•1/2 jar of wheat germ
•3/4 cup veg oil
•3/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
•5 raw eggs AND shells
•5 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
•pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf. Divide into 5 quart freezer bags (roll into balls approximately the size of tennis balls) and freeze. Thaw as needed and feed raw!
